FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 

WHAT KIND OF SUMMERCAMP IS CSM?

CSM is a co-ed traditional summer camp that offers a day camp (ages 5-12) an overnight camp (ages 7-15) and two leadership programs (ages 15-17).

WHERE IS CSM LOCATED?

CSM is located on Conesus Lake, about a 30 minute drive from Rochester, NY. Camp is located near a few towns with grocery stores, shops and a Walmart. Although we are not isolated, we are not near a large city (about a 7 hour drive from NYC) A car is needed to get to most places (5-8 kilometers from the nearest store).

AM I REQUIRED TO BE CATHOLIC?

No.
-Camp Stella Maris is affiliated with the Catholic religion, but we are not a “church camp.”
-We are non-conversional and do not do any religious study.
-We accept staff and campers of different religions or no religion.
-We have 2 masses per week that are outside and kid-friendly with singing and shouting responses.
-Everyone must attend and we ask at a minimum everyone stands when we stand and sits when we sit.

DO I GET ANY TIME OFF?

Each staff member gets TWO personal days per summer.
Live in staff also get
– 1 hour in the morning between 9-1230,
– 20-30 minutes for both lunch and dinner
– 1 hour after dinner at least once a week.
– 1 hours off every evening between 10 pm – 12 am including 1 night a week you get two hours and can leave the property.
– When campers are not at camp on the weekends.

WHAT CAN I DO IN MY TIME OFF?

When campers leave on the weekends, all staff (except those that are from out of town and don’t have somewhere to go) leave camp also. What you do during that time is up to you as long as you return at your scheduled time on Sunday. During your time off during the week you can…

WHERE WILL I LIVE?

In addition to their living space in the cabin, counselors will be given some personal space in staff only quarters. This includes showering and restroom facilities that are separate from camper facilities. There are also free laundry facilities available for staff use on campus.

CAN I HAVE MY CELL PHONE?

Counselors are allowed to have cell phones and other electronic devices (we do have free Wi-Fi access) but they must be kept and used in staff-only designated areas (not in the cabin).

WHEN WILL I GET PAID?

All staff are receive pay checks every other Friday. 

WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING IS AVAILABLE?

New staff orientation is on June 1-2. All counselors are required to attend Pre camp week the week before camp begins. Both of these sessions will be filled with trainings. There will also be weekly trainings throughout the summer.

HOW WILL THIS BUILD MY RESUME?

When you work at camp you will gain a plethora of 21st century skills that you will be able to take with you to whatever career you choose. You will be able to proudly show off life skills such as leadership, flexibility, sportsmanship productivity; knowledge skills like critical and creative thinking, collaboration, communication and problem solving. The skills acquired at camp are endless and can be the building blocks to your future.

ARE THERE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH?

Yes! After a successful completion of your first summer on staff there are opportunities to come back the next summer  in leadership roles, mentorship roles that include more responsibilities.

HOW DOES CAMP SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH?

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid training for all staff to build their toolboxes in supporting campers and personal mental health
  • Employee Assistance Program – every staff has access to this program which includes, among other supports, eight 1-hour virtual counseling sessions
  • Individual appointments with a licensed social worker (me) to help problem solve through camp-based wellness struggles/challenges and/or to connect with community based mental health supports
  • QR codes located throughout staff buildings for easy access to local, county, state, and federal mental health and wellness resources
  • Private space for virtual mental health appointments
  • Small groups that are established during pre-camp (and remain throughout the summer) to promote connection and support if needed. 
  • Mental health and wellness sessions during pre-camp training (building a self-care toolbox, resiliency, community building) – planned with the intention of staff having the opportunity and space to explore what they need to be mentally healthy throughout the summer. 
  • Increasing our trainings re: DEI, neurodiversity, inclusion, etc. to create a more inclusive and safer environment for all people living and working at camp. 

HOW ARE STAFF EVALUATED DURING THE SUMMER?

Each staff member will have weekly check ins with their immediate supervisor or CORE staff. Everyone will also be formally evaluated at least two times throughout the summer. 

DO YOU OFFER INTERSHIPS OR FIELD EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES?

Yes! We are happy to work with you and your school to develop experiences and hands on learning to meet your goals.
